On Location: Film Training

The Lewisham Film Office, in partnership with Lewisham Council, recently celebrated the success of its first ‘On Location: Film Training Course’ which was a tremendous triumph, offering a one-day training session to 10 of the boroughs residents. The course covered various topics, including the workings of film production, crew roles and responsibilities and opportunities for participants to network with industry professionals.

Developed in collaboration with thecallsheet.co.uk, led by Matt Gallagher, Amie Tridgell, and Jude Winstanley, and funded directly by Lewisham Council, we are thrilled to offer this course throughout the year and look forward to the next session! Local venue operators “Music and Theatre for All” kindly provided “The Fellowship Inn” in Bellingham for us to run the workshop with participants spending a day experiencing what it’s like to work on a film set.

As part of our aftercare program, candidates are added to our CV database while we assist them in finding paid work on productions filming in the borough, giving them the opportunity to network with active productions and gain experience on a real movie set, thus helping them to break into the industry!

Olwyn Hinds, the Head of Film Office Management who has been working on setting up the course over the past year commented “The Film and Television Industry is notorious for being incredibly competitive and difficult to get a foot in the door of. Here at the Lewisham Film Office, we continually strive to put our Lewisham residents at the forefront of what we are trying to achieve at bringing continually high levels of filming to the borough, and it is through large TV Dramas and Films choosing to film here that we were and are able to fund this exciting course for willing participants who are interested in gaining a greater understanding of what it is like working on a set, as well as future paid positions of productions filming in the area. Working in close collaboration with Lewisham Council we held our first course in July of this year and it was fantastic to oversee the running of the course on the day and to see the tangible benefits come to life that filming in the borough brings. We had some fantastic feedback from all the participants and we can’t wait to put on our next course later in the year!”. This training course was made possible by funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
